Starr Saphir

Starr Saphir was an amazing woman who, for over 40 years, led bird walks in New York City’s Central Park. For a donation of $5-8 bucks, Saphir (pronounced ‘Sapphire’) glassed for over 50 species per day at times, and drew a steady following of fellow-bird watchers year round. The 200+ day-in, day-out birders of Central Park record their sightings in a central notebook in the park’s Boathouse. Ms. Saphir passed away in February of this year. She herself left behind over 80 such notebooks.

Saphir is featured in the 2012 documentary Birders: The Central Park Effect available to watch now on Netflix.
