How Chris McCandless Died

Chris McCandless This New Yorker article is a few weeks old now, but if you haven't read it, it's well worth your time. Krakauer dives in and investigates how Chris McCandless, the subject of Into The Wild, really might have died. Another footnote in an already amazing story:

ATTENTION POSSIBLE VISITORS. S.O.S. I NEED YOUR HELP. I AM INJURED, NEAR DEATH, AND TOO WEAK TO HIKE OUT OF HERE. I AM ALL ALONE, THIS ISĀ NO JOKE. IN THE NAME OF GOD, PLEASE REMAIN TO SAVE ME. I AM OUT COLLECTING BERRIES CLOSE BY AND SHALL RETURN THIS EVENING. THANK YOU, CHRIS McCANDLESS AUGUST ?

I can’t say I’m a fan of Krakauer. To me he seems a hatchet man (of Boukreev – a hero in my mind, and Mortenson – complex and missguided perhaps). His agennda with McCandless seems to be making a hero out of an inept sad fool. He also likes himself a lot in his book on McCandless. I suggest people read someone else.
