Mikael Kennedy and I spent some time down in southwest Texas this last winter, writing and shooting a story about Big Bend National Park for Garden and Gun. The article is featured in the August/September issue of the magazine, so make sure to get your hands on one. (And yes, that’s me in the photo above.)
Check back next week for a bunch of Mikael’s photos that didn’t make it into the story. They’re handsome as can be.

Love Big Bend so much. Spent my senior year spring break there back in the day… so beautiful.
Havent been to a million state parks but we did spend 2 days in BB. Crossed the Rio Grande even… Sunburn. Night drive through wildest electrical storm I ever saw… our car got hit. Awesome.
Those appear NOT to be Cold Splinters shorts that you’re wearing. I don’t know why–I love mine.
Know of any folks who might carry this in New York?
I’ve loved Big Bend since I first visited as a kid during a family vacation in ’92. I cried on the way home (home was Houston at the time, so you can’t really blame me), and kept a poster of the Sierra del Carmen on my wall for years. I’ve been back maybe 15 or 16 times, not sure anymore. So for me it’s the most visited national park.
Also – dig your HMG pack.
