As I mentioned before, the current issue of Garden and Gun features a story about Big Bend National Park, written by me and photographed by Mikael Kennedy. And since it was impossible to squeeze in all of Mikael’s photos into a five page spread, we’ve decided to post a few more here on Cold Splinters. Enjoy the expanded edition of the story after the jump…

Wow – these are incredible. I was in Dallas for work a few years ago and figured I’d take a couple of days to visit Big Bend, since I was in the neighborhood (sort of).

Wrote a couple of songs, waded across the river into Mexico for lunch, saw some excellent mountains. One of the best short trips I’ve ever taken. Thanks for all the great photos!

These are the photos you cut? I guess I really do have to get the issue mentioned.

Even being a Texan, Big Bend is simply that alien world that exists out on the edge of outer space it seems. But a trip out there is like a cleansing of the soul. That drive into the park from Marathon seems like it takes an eternity, and perhaps with good reason. Once you reach it, you leave everything else behind.

Hadn’t seen in any of your previous excursions out there whether you were able to visit Terlingua, but that is worth the trip out there alone – a dusty, near-ghost-town of hippies and burnouts living on the precipice of the US. Great vibes in all.
