Salt, Bacon, jellybeans etc.

In 1937, Edward Weston was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a first for a photographer. He was given a two thousand dollar stipend and, with his companion Charis Wilson (whom he would later marry), he would photograph the American West from April 1937 to April 1938. Ansel Adams (pictured above) invited the couple to visit Yosemite, where he would take them to the High Sierra, a place that Weston had never visited. Upon arriving in Ansel Adams country, Weston wrote the following:

We speculated on what gastric adventures lay before us. Back at the start of our travels we had written Ansel to ask if he knew where we could get dehydrated vegetables. He had answered no, but anyway they were an insult to the taste buds; years of camping had taught him the needs of the outdoor diet were few and simple: salt, sugar, bacon, flour, jelly beans, and whiskey.*

Salt, sugar, bacon, flour, jelly beans, and whiskey. Well, that is one of the best things I have heard in a long while. And I hate jellybeans. But that list is just wonderful. Love it.

I’m with you on the jelly bean front, Not my cup of tea. It’s Nibs red licorice or wine gums are a staple in my pack, candy wise.

After decades of wilderness survival, I find that when dehydration looms, the white and yellow ones give you a false sense of security, and I find that bears are partial to the green ones. I trust my fate to only cinnamon and licorice jelly beans. And weather permitting, the only other staple in my pack is Hagen-Daz Coffee ice cream. Other than water and Reeces p-nut butter cups (protein), that about takes care of all the essentials. Ansel certainly knew his backpacking skills. There is one thing that I have always wondered though, what do you think he would have Tweeted about Moonrise over Hernandez? ….. “Might have gotten a cool moon pic tonight if I hadn’t been so busy picking up spilled jelly beans – left shutter open too long! Damn!”

Salt, sugar, bacon, flour, jelly beans, and whiskey.

Don’t get me wrong; these are all good things. But how many different meals can you concoct from this list?
    - Biscuits and bacon.
    - Jelly-bean biscuits and bacon.

    I think that’s about it.

Outstanding. I think I’ll attempt the 24 Hours In The Old Pueblo on nothing but these items and water. Wish me luck.
