Maybe not a rookie mistake.. as you don’t seem like a rookie anymore. You just made a mistake. Everybody makes ‘em. Here is my stove mistake:
Took me forever to figured out that the leather pump-cup in my MSR WhisperLite Internationale stove needs a tiny bit oil to make a seal and build pressure in the fuel bottle. (I was bad to read directions) so I thought the stove just didn’t work. I kept buying a new MSR pump for the stove year after year – season after season. (I think I bought three in all). Until one day a friend explained it to me. “Did you lube the leather cup that forms the pressure seal?”
DOOOHH! I put a little nose grease on the leather and —- just like new. I now have three fuel pumps for my stove. NOW THAT my friend is a rookie mistake!
Everyone does it.
On a backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon both my partner and I assumed the other packed a tent. Not a big deal in the desert, until an unexpected storm rears its ugly head over the canyon rim…
Forgetting stuff sucks. I tend to forget my sleeping pad. Luckily for me, the last time I forgot it was in Saguaro NP and I found a heavy-ass military sleeping bag in a bear locker. Sure beat my sleeping pad.
I forgot a map and compass. Big mistake.
