Listen, Listen Around You.

In high school, I was given an assignment to present a verse from Walt Whitman’s Song Of Myself. It was supposed to be done creatively, so my group decided to do it like the high school kids that we were, and combine American Prayer with Pink Floyd. A Spencer Gifts wet dream. Enjoy.

Capetown To Cairo Caravan

2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Capetown to Cairo Caravan. Led by Wally Byam, the man behind the Airstream,  the event was an overland, 221-day, 14,307-mile journey embarked upon by 106 Caravanners in 41 Airstream travel trailers. Byam led many of these caravans around different parts of the world, but the Capetown to Cairo trip has become the most legendary.

Warren Miller

I was always trying to avoid going to the ubiquitous Warren Miller screening in college. In Boulder, these movies and the bras starring in them were a big deal. They were all bona fide celebrities. I hated those guys. We all did. Assholes.

But if you put your own music on and watch these things now, they’re pretty okay. But I still hate these guys.

EagleFest 2009

That’s right, it’s time for Narrowsburg, NY’s 8th annual EagleFest. Everyone’s favorite Delaware Valley falconer, Bill Streeter, will be back and, according to John DiGiorgio, Delaware Valley Eagle Alliance Chairman, Eaglefest 2009 “promises to be an entire day of fun for the whole family.” The fun goes down on Saturday, January 17th.

The Rodeo

$$$$:

No sport packs as much into eight seconds as bull riding. In Baltimore, the winner, Kasey Hayes, rode for 24 seconds and earned $28,370. That is a pay rate of more than $4.25 million an hour — as if anyone could ride the 1,500-pound likes of Chief of Staff, Walk the Line or El Presidente for an hour, or would want to. Snyder rode a total of 11.3 seconds, earned nothing, and was left to hope — and wait — for better results at Madison Square Garden this weekend. But waiting is what bull riders do most. After his first ride in Baltimore, Snyder had almost exactly 24 hours to think about his second one. First, he had to get rid of the headache.

Snyder is a 26-year-old from Raymore, Mo., with a black hat, a dignified air and a nose reconstructed a few years ago by a surgeon who used Snyder’s driver’s license as a guide. That procedure followed a head-to-head run-in with a bull — a brutally common collision known among riders as being jerked down or, more graphically, dashboarded.

He was the tour’s 2001 rookie of the year, earning $348,560.54 the season he turned 19. He is now known in bull-riding circles for an ironman streak of 236 consecutive P.B.R. events. Part of each event is killing time between rounds.

Erase Me From Your Mind

I’ve had this tune stuck in my head for the last week. Can’t seem to kick it. I’ve been singing it to myself every chance I get. If only the words weren’t such a goddamn bummer…
